U.S. Government Debt And Precious Metals

It has been a volatile year for the precious metals, with a huge run-up in January followed by a massive plunge from March to June. Behind the scenes, however, the total amount of U.S. government debt continues to grow, and it serves as a constant reminder of why we bought gold in the first place.

Since you may not know this, it bears repeating. The U.S. Department of Treasury releases its current deficit numbers on the ninth business day of every month. For August 2026, that was last Wednesday. You can find the full report here.

U.S. Budget Deficit Reaches $432 Billion

Let's start with the just-completed month of July, where the U.S. government posted a deficit of $432B—FOR THE MONTH! That's horrific and a full 48% above the $291B deficit of July 2025.

• Net Interest of over $100B exceeds defense spending.
• Debt service alone requires 63% of all collected personal and corporate taxes.
• Customs Duties now negative as the .gov is forced to pay back what was collected earlier.

Now look at the full year tables below. The total FY26 deficit has now exceeded the FULL YEAR of FY25, but with two months to go. The final FY26 deficit is now very likely to surpass $2T.

• July26 receipts (income) almost identical to July25 receipts.
• July26 outlays 766.3B vs 629.6B in July25.
• Aug25 saw a massive 344.8B deficit. How awful is Aug26 going to be?
• Since March, every MoM receipts comparison vs 2025 is lower.

Gold And Silver As Debt Continues To Rise

This is a massive, glaring problem that is not getting better. In fact, it will never get better. DOGE was tried and failed. Tariffs were tried and failed. There is no way out. Soon, the total U.S. debt will exceed $40T and is likely to reach $50T by late 2030 or early 2031, if not sooner, as it accumulates at the rate of $1,000,000 every 19 seconds.

So, that's it. That's your post for this week. Why? Because I don't want you thinking about anything else. Not the war. Not the FOMC minutes. Not flash PMI data. Oh sure, we'll still watch the charts and try to catch dips to buy and trade. However, none of it truly matters.

Investing In Gold And Silver

All that matters is that nothing stops the debt train until it crashes off the tracks and wipes out the whole town. As such, neither you nor I own enough precious metal. Buy more when you can and block out all the other noise.
