The month of August is typically defined by low volume and low interest as traders and investors take time away to refresh. As such, August is often called the "dog days of summer". With everything happening in 2026, it's unlikely that this year's August will be typical.
The month begins with a very busy week of economic data. On the calendar is the assortment of service sector PMIs, the ADP jobs report, the latest JOLTS report, and the official U.S. jobs report for July. All of it this week, and all of it will move the precious metal markets.

Of course, that's just this week. Other news items will drive volatility through the month. IT announced last week that the Bank of Japan will now be working closely with the U.S. Treasury Department to support the Japanese yen. This highly unusual move will have far reaching consequences, but it's currently unclear how those consequences will unfold. With the yen carry trade providing global market liquidity for decades, any hint of an unwind could bring significant consequences for all markets, including gold and silver.

Global Economic Risks And Precious Metals
But the major unknown unknown continues to be the U.S. war with Iran. Since March, the war has fueled uncertainty on energy prices, inflation, interest rates, and Fed policy. With no end in sight as August begins, it appears the markets will remain subject to the whims of headlines on a daily basis. This volatility will demand trader attention and, as such, disallow the usual dog days of rest and relaxation. My advice? Go ahead and take that vacation. Step away for a few days and get refreshed because the back one-third of the year is likely to be volatile and crazy. However, while you're away, be sure to keep one eye on precious metal prices because if one more price dip materializes, you may want to move fast in order to grab some more physical metal.
The year 2026 is certainly unfolding in a manner that no one expected when the calendar flipped on January 1. The Dog Days of Summer being volatile and unpredictable is just another step along this year's unusual journey.
